Shanghai probes building collapse

The collapse of an apartment building sparked safety fea

Officials in Shanghai are questioning nine people as part of an investigation into why a nearly finished apartment building collapsed on Saturday.

The building at Shanghai's "Lotus Riverside" apartment complex toppled over almost intact, killing one worker.

The developers had sold 489 of the 629 flats in the 13-storey building, and owners of the flats are now demanding refunds or compensation.

The event has sparked worries about construction safety in China.

The building, one of 11 in a wider project, fell over early on Saturday when pillars that were supposed to be buried deep under the earth were uprooted.

China's official news agency, Xinhua, said officials were taking "appropriate control measures" against nine people, including the developer, construction contractor and supervisor of the project.

The China Daily newspaper showed tearful owners gathering for talks about taking collective action against the developer, and owners of flats in nearby buildings also expressed fears for their safety.

Commentators in the Chinese press have noted the project's riverside location, the rise in water levels and potentially unstable piles of mud near to the collapsed building.

Officials have said they will investigate the cause of the collapse thoroughly.

On Tuesday this week, went to Khmer embassy about our junior expired passport. Really hoped she wou ld be sent back to Khmer but it turned out to be Ok. がっかりした

On the way back, we decided to take a tour around Roppongi in Tokyo. It was actually a big tour, walked within a radius of 500 m around the station... station - Roppongi Hills - station - Tokyo midtown, eventually took a bus back to Shibuya after got lost.

The ice-cream I had...very delicious

What's more, we were very excited because our 邪魔後輩 are not around this time.

Sheppard Robson submits Waingels College plans

Sheppard Robson has submitted a planning application for the £29 million Waingels College in Woodley, Wokingham.

The scheme will incorporate a cross-laminated timber structural system that, according to the practice, will reduce its carbon emissions by 60 per cent.

Sheppard Robson's proposal divides the school into three pastoral bases that are expressed as individual learning communities, conceived as a 'school within a school'.

Sheppard Robson says the 'community' becomes a village of teaching and learning spaces; the central Open Heart space as a village green; and a fourth building houses the large shared assembly and dining hall spaces.

The new buildings will provide space for 1,500 pupils and 172 teaching staff.

Subject to planning consent, the two-phase construction programme for the college is expected to start next year and will be completed in October 2011.

Recently completed Cocoon Tower makes education design as easy as A-B-C

Standing in Tokyo's distinctive high-rise district of Nishi-Shinjuku, Tange Associates' Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower stands as a symbol of innovation and exception in educational design. It is no wonder this awesome construction was recently awarded as Skyscraper of the Year by Emporis.

The 50 level building contains 3 different schools: Tokyo Mode Gakuen (fashion), HAL Tokyo (IT and digital contents) and Shuto Iko (medical treatments and care). Tange Associates advise: "The building’s innovative shape and cutting edge façade embodies our unique “Cocoon” concept. Embraced within this incubating form, students are inspired to create, grow and transform."

The vertical campus, which completed in October, can hold 10,000 students and incorporates a 3-storey high atrium to substitute as a 'schoolyard', called the 'Student Lounge' and multi-use corridors where communication can flourish.

The tower floor plan is simple. Three rectangular classroom areas rotate 120 degrees around the inner core. From the 1st floor to the 50th floor, these rectangular classroom areas are arranged in a curvilinear form. The inner core consists of an elevator, staircase and shaft. The Student Lounge is located between the classrooms and face three directions, east, southwest and northwest. Greenery planted at lower levels brings nature and softness to the design and its elliptical form swathed in an aluminium curtain wall creates a form pleasing to the eye from every level whilst minimising the building's footprint.

Tange Associates hope that the building will help to inspire a transformation in the area: "Some of the buildings in the immediate area surrounding Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower have become old and absolete. However this area is very important to connect Shinjuku Station and the Shinjuku CBD. Our aim is to use the building to revitalize and reenergize this area and to create a gateway between the Station and the CBD."

Zaha nets Vienna library

Zaha Hadid Architects has won a competition to design a library and learning centre for the University of Economics & Business in Vienna.

Hadid beat Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne’s US practice Morphosis and Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas to win first place in the competition, which was judged by a jury headed by Austrian architect Wolf Prix.

The library will be the centrepiece for the university’s new campus, with Hadid’s polygonal block occupying a 42,000sq m site.

The winning 30m-high, five-storey design contrasts the straight edges of the external facade with fluid lines in the internal spaces, reflecting the practice’s signature style.

An interior open-air “canyon” acts as a public plaza, while the main facilities are concentrated in a central block which divides into two strands, wrapping around each other and enclosing the central space.

Arup’s Berlin office will be responsible for engineering the building. The project architect is Cornelius Schlotthauer.
